How to Install Your Email Signature in Thunderbird

Step-by-step guide for Mozilla Thunderbird email client

📝 Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Open Account Settings

Open Mozilla Thunderbird on your computer.

Go to ToolsAccount Settings (or EditAccount Settings on some systems).

Step 2: Select Your Email Account

In the left panel, select the email account you want to add a signature to. Each account can have its own signature.

Step 3: Enable Signature

In the account settings panel on the right, scroll down to the Signature text section.

Check the box ☑️ Attach the signature from a file instead if you want to use an HTML file, or use the text box for simple signatures.

Step 4: Choose Your Method

Method A: Use HTML File (Recommended for Rich Signatures)

  1. Copy your signature HTML from SignatureAI
  2. Save it as a .html file on your computer (e.g., "signature.html")
  3. Check ☑️ Attach the signature from a file instead
  4. Click Choose... and select your HTML file
  5. Check ☑️ Use HTML to enable rich formatting

Method B: Paste Directly (Simple Signatures)

  1. Leave Attach the signature from a file instead unchecked
  2. In the text box, type or paste your signature text
  3. Check ☑️ Use HTML if you want to use HTML code
  4. Paste your HTML signature code directly

💡 Tip: Using an HTML file (Method A) is better for complex signatures with images and formatting.

Step 5: Configure Signature Options

Below the signature settings, you can choose:

  • Do not include signature for replies - Check this if you only want signatures on new emails
  • Place the signature before a quote in your reply - Check to put signature above quoted text

Step 6: Save and Test

Click OK to save your settings. Create a new email to see your signature in action!

🔧 Advanced: Using Signature Add-ons

For more advanced signature features, consider installing a Thunderbird add-on:

  • Signature Switch: Manage multiple signatures and switch between them easily
  • SmartTemplate4: Create dynamic signatures with variables and templates
  • Signature Manager: Advanced signature management with per-folder signatures

To install add-ons: Go to ToolsAdd-ons and Themes, then search for signature-related add-ons.

🔧 Troubleshooting Common Issues

❌ My signature doesn't appear in new emails

Solution: Check these settings:

  • Make sure you saved the Account Settings (clicked OK)
  • Verify the correct account is selected
  • If using a file, check that the file path is correct
  • Try restarting Thunderbird

❌ Images don't display in my signature

Solution: Thunderbird image handling:

  • Use publicly hosted images with full HTTPS URLs
  • Avoid base64-encoded images (limited support)
  • Make sure "Use HTML" is checked in Account Settings
  • Test by sending yourself an email

❌ My HTML signature looks like plain code

Solution: Enable HTML mode:

  • Go back to Account Settings
  • Make sure ☑️ Use HTML is checked
  • Also check ☑️ Compose messages in HTML format in the main account settings
  • Save settings and restart Thunderbird

❌ Signature file path error

Solution: File path tips:

  • Save your signature.html file in an easy-to-find location
  • Use absolute paths (full file path from root)
  • Avoid special characters in filename
  • Make sure the file has .html extension

💡 Pro Tips for Thunderbird

  • Create different signatures for different email accounts - each account has its own signature setting
  • Save your signature HTML file in a permanent location (don't delete it later!)
  • Test by composing a new message and checking the signature appearance
  • Use add-ons like Signature Switch if you need multiple signatures per account
  • Keep signatures simple - complex HTML may not render correctly in all email clients
